Problem - Since the introduction of the plastic grocery bag in 1977, society has become accustomed to using more than 500 billion plastic bags annually. In the U.S., 12 million barrels of oil are used to produce plastic bags per year. In one U.S. city, they estimated that it costs 8.5 million dollars each year to deal with the waste of plastic bags alone. More than 100,000 marine mammals die each year mistaking plastic bags for food.
Solution - Bring your own reusable bag with you! As society becomes more conscious of our depleting environment, individuals are trying to figure out what they can do to help save our earth. One of the easiest things you can do, starting right now, is to bring your own bag with you when shopping. Weather it’s retail therapy or you need to get ingredients for dinner, using one reusable bag can save up to 1000 single use plastic bags per year. That means if just 100 people did it, we could save 100,000 wasteful bags. Most grocery stores these days offer reusable bags for a low cost. My favorite is one made by Envirosax, it’s fashionable yet convenient. Look for a bag that makes you proud to use it.
Shopping and saving the environment at the same time feels as good as a day at the spa! I challenge all of you to start saving on waste with this method today.
