Happy Earth Day again!

Further to Shanna’s “Scuppie Post”, I have some suggestions on how to be a one! It’s fairly easy - after reading the description of what a Scuppie is, I must say I belong to that group. I want to be Earth-friendly, but I ain’t gonna start wearing all beige and eat granolas. (sorry granola people.. no diss to your bars.)
1. Give up the plastic bag
Now we all know you don’t need that many plastic bags. True, some of us might use a few for our household garbages, and I am by no means suggesting you throw all of them away. But for grocery trips, bring your own bag. There are so many different bags with amazing designs out these days, it’s fashionable to BE one of those who tote them around! And also, shun those who uses plastic. I always give them the evil eye when I checkout. You know what I’m talking about.
2. Environmentally sound Cleansers
We’re all about cleaning here. I live messily, but when I clean, I need it to be CLEAN. Shanna had a suggestion on cleaning products, and in my previous post, found some great home-made cleaning products.
3. Turn off the tap when you’re brushing
I’ve always left the tap running. Why? I don’t even know. I blame my parents when they first taught me how to brush. But this is simple. Just.. turn it off.
4. Get good garbage bags
Because you are going to stop taking these drugstore plastics, I can’t imagine you going down to the garbage room every time you have something to throw away. Buy some recycled trash bags! 7th Generation, an eco-friendly company, has a full range of products that are good for the earth. And they’re affordable!
5. You don’t need to wear hemp..
I saw some hemp wedding gowns on the weekend and they were disgusting. So I am not even going to suggest you wear hemp, because, as far as they’ve come, they feel gross, looks gross, and I wouldn’t want you to strut around like that. But there are ways to be more conscious of what you’re purchasing. Check the label, be aware of the material. Organic is good, but a lot of things are mislabelled as organic. I want to look good, and hippies don’t look very good. So my mantra? Be conscious, buy what you love, and stop being wasteful.
6. 100 mile diet
The idea is to not only to try and eat organic (where food is harvested without the use of chemical and damaging pesticides and herbicides, where livestocks are bred and fed in a humane way), but also to limit the distance of which the food needs to travel in order to get to your grocery store. When a mangosteen has to travel all the way from Thailand to get to your local Whole Foods, the carbon foodprint just to get the mangosteen there.. doesn’t make sense, does it? Eat local. And a lot of times, it’s better on your wallet.
This is an ongoing learning process for all of us! We all need to do our part, and no effort goes unnoticed!
