Wonderful Whistler

Springtime in Whistler is off season and a wonderful time to have a weekend get-a-way. Being a local I am going to share some of my favourite hot spots and let you in on some sweet deals to be had in the off season. Let’s pretend you are coming up on a Friday night and leaving on Sunday morning… Here is what I would do…
Friday night…check in a great hotel. There are lots, the New Nita Lake Lodge is lovely, First Tracks, and Legends are also great if you don’t mind being in Creekside, $7 will get you to the village from any of these with Resort Cabs. If you don’t want to drive at all during you stay, shack up right in the village. I like the Adara or Sundial Boutique hotels, the Westin or the Four Seasons are also fabulous, central and chic. Drop your bags and hit the hot tub.
Saturday morning starts with yummy brunch. My favourite is Elements. Love the tomato and avocado bennie with a potato tartlette and crispy thick cut bacon. Other local faves are Crepe Montagne, and The Wildwood.
While you are in the village there are a few shops worth checking out. Fashionistas will like Guess, Lululemon, and some of the smaller boutiques like Vanity or Ruby Tuesday. The Glacier Shop and Westbeach also carry some funky sportswear and casual wear lines like Gentle Fawn, Volcom and Lifetime Collective. Home decor lovers will like a visit to Skitch Knick Knacks and Paddywhacks where everything is made by Canadian Artisans. Another cute store for home goodies is the Daily Planet in the Marketplace. I’ll leave lunch to you, you can find yummy food throughout the village.
After lunch I would definitely hit a spa. Springtime is off season and most spas will offer great specials! Check out the Pique, our local paper for special offers. My favourites are the Vida Spa at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, it’s serene, consistent and wonderful. The Four Seasons also have a great spa, as well as many of the other hotels…Solarice is also very popular with the locals.
Nothing is better after a spa treatment than a late afternoon nap. Go ahead, sneak back and enjoy a decadent snooze.
When you wake freshen up and prepare to feast. My top pick would definitely be The Rimrock. It’s also the season for the Spring 3 Course Special. Two appies and main course for $45. It is amazing. La Rua and many other restaurants offer similar specials that are well worth it. Apres hit a lounge with a fireplace and enjoy some cocktails. Nita Lake Lodge is a great new one, Elements, or 21 Steps are popular with my crowd. Your concierge can point you in the right direction for what you feel like. The village also hosts a great variety of clubs if you feel like whooping it up a bit. I would also ask about this when you are in town because they all offer different music and atmospheres, depends on your tastes. You’ll also find what live music is in town in the local papers which are available throughout the village.
Sunday morning before you leave take a trip up the gondola to Blackcomb mountain. You can still ski/board on the glacier or just do some hiking and enjoy the view. I wouldn’t recommend this though if you don’t have the right gear. If you just want to stroll and shoot some scenic pics try the Lost Lake Loop or anywhere on the valley trail.
Soo, come visit us here and enjoy the off season rates everywhere on most everything.
