The Right to Love

Canada has done it. Europe has done it. Along with Massachuessets, the state of California has constitutionally recognized same sex marriages. It was only a couple of years ago where thousands of same-sex marriages at San Francisco City Hall were considered invalid. This is a momentous ruling and many are rejoicing to finally see the first major steps into equality. However, right-wing fundamentalists such as religious and conservative groups will try to support and proceed with an initiative in November to overturn that ballot.
The topic of same-sex marriage has always been a highly sensitive subject matter and has led to very heated debates. This particular ruling will definitely be brought up with the current presidential candidates. Historically, candidates from the Democratic and Republic parties have leaned toward the conventional marriage makeup of a man and a woman.
Personally, I think people have a natural right, and not dictated by constitutions and governments, to love and be loved by whomever they want. A key argument is that supporting same sex marriages defies the meaning of a Christian marriage and breaks traditions and customs which current society is based upon. Traditions are constantly changing and new traditions are always developing to coincide with what’s happening in the world. So why not make equality a tradition of our times?
