Birthday Suits and Boys

They didn’t write ballads about broken hearts and keys scratching some ex’s car or raps about being straight out of Compton and blinging out one’s rough rider. Well Ludacris did do a shout out to Toronto, so I guess Canada can be a bit ‘hood. These guys came up with tongue in cheek songs about having a $1000000 dollars, liking sushi, and some guy named Brian Wilson.

The award winning Canadian group, Barenaked Ladies, is celebrating 20 years of fun, creative, and unique music. They are well known for their comedic slant to their live shows. Their smart and insightful wit and banters, personally I think, is a reflection of their Canadian-ess. I would trade five minutes of improv over some major band’s 20 minutes washroom break/intermission because they need to get through a wardrobe change.

It’s been a whirlwind trip for these homegrown boys. They started in high school and became famous for squeezing into a MuchMusic’s Speaker’s Corner booth and belting out ‘Be My Yoko Ono’. Shortly afterwards, they shot to fame and spent the 90s producing one hit album after another. They also went through hard times of arguments, fall outs, and near breakups. Fame and popularity also eluded them in the US. But it was a song that talked about X-Files, wasabi, Sailor Moon, and Sting allowed BNL to rule the US airways. Now these boys are men who have grown up and have families and children. BNL’s new family life is reflected in their new album, Snacktime!. An album of original songs aimed at children for a new generation to enjoy the quirks and charm of the Barenaked Ladies.
