Hockey fans across Canada gasped in shock and disappointment when they learned that CBC lost the rights to the Hockey theme song after it failed to renew the license. Apparently, the rumors were that each time CBC plays the song, the station must pay $500. It was written back in 1968 by Vancouver composer Dolores Claman. The song has been played for four decades at the start of CBC’s broadcast of the games. The station is now holding a nationwide contest for a new theme song and will award the winner $100,000.
Hockey fans can release the gasp and breathe in a sigh of relief that CTV has picked up the song and will play it on its affiliate channels like TSN and RDS.
So aside from ‘O Canada’, we will feel the surge of patriotism when we hear “dunt- da-DUNT-da-dunt” when the season starts again.
