THE OTHER
David Guterson, author of Snow Falling on Cedars, has a great new novel that examines friendship and the quintessential struggle with materialism, The Other. Trust-fund kid John William Barry and blue-collar Neil Countryman meet in high school and bond over their love of the outdoors, but the relationship becomes more complicated over the years. John gets rid of all of his possessions and chooses to live in a shelter in the woods. Neil opts for the conventional route of father and teacher despite John’s lectures about living a simple existence. Though they’re both dudes, the complexities of their ever-changing relationship will definitely strike a chord.
